There are several festivals throughout the year in Lexington, most of which run from May to December. Mayfest Arts Fair occurs annually on Mother’s Day weekend and celebrates literary, visual & performing arts. The first weekend in June is Kentucky’s oldest bluegrass music festival which is called Festival of the Bluegrass. The biggest and most popular event of the year is Lexington’s Fourth of July, not only does the city have a presentation of fireworks but they also host a parade and several concerts spanning over several days. There are two winter holiday events, the first is a lighting display called, “Southern Lights: Spectacular Sights on Holiday Nights,” the second event is The Lexington Christmas Parade that is held the day after Thanksgiving.

In Lexington there are over one hundred parks that include amenities such as golf courses, dog parks, disc golf and skate parks. Horse racing is very popular in Lexington. Within the city there are two historical tracks: Keeneland and The Red Mile Harness Track. The Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm and educational park that annually hosts the equestrian event called Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event. Thoroughbred breeding is centered in Lexington because of the high calcium in the soil which leads to greater durability and stronger bones in horses. Wildcats Basketball at the University of Kentucky is the only sport that rivals horse racing in popularity.
